3 reasons why Man United could miss out on a Top 4 spot this season

Man United Top 4: Manchester United’s hopes of a UCL spot next season have been dealt with a crushing blow following the loss to West Ham on Sunday.

United suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Hammers leaving them in 4th place in the standings but with just a point’s advantage over Liverpool; who have played an additional game.

This has brought Ten Hag’s first season at United under a bit of pressure. United wasn’t expected to challenge for the league title, but weren’t also expected to drop a crucial lead in the race for Champions League.

Since Mid-April, United has won just 2 matches in the league and have a tricky fixture list ahead.

They play Wolves(H), Bournemouth(A), Chelsea(H) and Fulham(H) to end the campaign.

United need a further 3 wins to secure a 4th place finish this season but for which, lack the momentum currently.

Through the following article, we see why United could end up missing out on UCL spot after suffering the defeat to West Ham.

Lack of Momentum

United had a 11 point advantage over Liverpool and were almost confirmed to secure UCL football next season in Mid-April.

But a lack of momentum and spillage of points has left United reeling with just a point above Klopp’s side.

Liverpool have won 6 games on the spin and could well displace United off the 4th spot if the Red Devils suffer another draw or loss in any of their matches.

Such is the closeness in league table positions. United conceded 2 late goals after being 2-0 ahead vs Spurs to ensure a point a piece.

Following that, a rather insipid performance saw them scrape past Villa 1-0 at home, but back to back losses vs Brighton and West Ham puts them in danger.

The team has lacked energy, skill and intensity which sees them in this position.

The likes of Varane and Martinez form an important cog in United’s back-line and with both out through injury, United is short at the back.

Their absence has left a gaping hole for United with the replacements not bringing in the same intensity to the table.

Lack of energy is another reason for United’s flat natured performances. Casemiro, Eriksen haven’t been at their best in recent weeks while Bruno has been inconsistent.

United have seriously lacked goals with them having scored just 3 since the 2nd leg loss to Sevilla in the Europa League Q/F clash.

Rashford has scored only twice since the start of April with Weghorst and Martial not supporting the English player.

Weghorst has yet to find the back of the net in the EPL for United while Martial’s last goal came against Everton in early April.

United’s goal-stocks have dried up and their dip in performances has seen Liverpool closen the gap and ensure their chance of playing Champions League next season.

If United don’t improve on these points, Ten Hag’s decently positive season could see United drop into the Europa League.

However, United still have a shot at another trophy this season with them to face Man City in the FA Cup Final next month.
