England thrash San Marino by 5-0, get three points in the opener of WCQ

England began their World Cup Qualification campaign in grand style as they humbled lowly-ranked San Marino 5-0 at Wembley Stadium last night.
ImageGoals from Ward-Prowse, Sterling, Watkins and a brace from Calver-Lewin was enough to see off the away side.
The hosts had 15 shots on target while San Marino did not even have one. Such was the domination from England.
A special mention to the San Marino Goalkeeper, Elia Benedettini who made 10 crucial saves to avoid an embarrassment last night.
ImageJames Ward-Prowse opened the scoring with a clinical finish to make it 1-0 in the 14th minute, before Calvert-Lewin doubled it in the 21st minute through a smart finish.
Sterling made it 3-0 in the 31st minute after hammering from close range by cutting past 2 defenders.
Benedettini had his hands full too as he made important saves of Lingard and Chillwell to deny them opportunities.
ImageGareth Southgate made a raft of changes in the 2nd half once he was 3-0 up by bringing on Foden, Bellingham and Mings to provide them well deserved minutes.
ImageCalvert-Lewin continued the damage by scoring the 4th goal of the night in the 53rd minute when he flicked past Benedettini.
The San Marino no 1 was once called into action to deny chances from Lingard and Ward-Prowse’s freekick.
ImageOllie Watkins making his debut completed the party for the English side by adding his name to the scoresheet as he pulled a low shot past Benedettini into the far corner to make it 5-0.
Gareth Southgate would be disappointed that his side did not score more with the chances on offer.
