Ibrahima Konate has signed a deal with Liverpool for £35M from RB Leipzig

Ibrahima Konate Liverpool: Konate became the third player to represent Liverpool and Leipzig, he completed a £ 35 million trade to Anfield and joined Liverpool.

The Frenchman will become the first signing of the summer for Jurgen Klopp’s team. Konate is arriving to bolster an injury-plagued defensive unit in 2020/21.

He joins with a flourishing reputation despite a hip problem that haunted him during his final year and a half in Germany. He has played 95 times for Leipzig following his transfer from Sochaux in 2017.

The 22-year-old will also come with strong character references.

Klopp could even turn to a member of his first team for an opinion on Konate as a player and as a person. As Naby Keita played alongside the center-back 16 times during their time together in Leipzig.

A New Rise for Defender in Liverpool

If Konate’s praise for Keita in an interview with Oh My Goal last year is something to follow, there is a real respect between the couple that can be built in Liverpool.

When asked who the best players he has played with during his career so far. Konate named Keita and another former Leipzig star, Timo Werner.

“Naby Keita surprised me by its size,” he explained.

“He wasn’t tall, not muscular, but technically he was one step ahead, and even in passes and duels he surprised me!”

Konate and Keita started together in the midfielder’s last game for Leipzig, a 6-2 win at Hertha Berlin in 2018, but things haven’t turned out as expected for Keita in Liverpool so far.

Having been chosen to take on a key role with Klopp, the Guinean has struggled with countless injury problems, and in three full seasons with the Reds he has only played 76 times, starting just 47 of them.

With two years remaining on his contract, a decision on Keita’s future may be required this summer, but all signs are that he will be given another chance to prove himself.

It could be that he serves as a valuable asset in helping Konate adjust to his new life in Merseyside, although his command of English and German should allow him to speak comfortably within the team.

Whether they will have a chance to play together regularly in Liverpool remains will see. But perhaps next season the Kop can finally enjoy the Keita that surprised Konate when they were teammates in Leipzig.
