India overcame world No. 7 Ireland 1-0 in a hard-fought match to keep their quarter-final hopes alive. Currently, India are fifth in the pool table behind Ireland by goal difference. Both have scored three points each.

The Netherlands are leading Pool A followed by Germany (both 12 points). Great Britain are a clear third with six points. Only the top four teams advance to the quarter-finals.
For India to qualify for the quarter-finals, the Rani Rampal-led team will have to beat South Africa in its last group match on Saturday and hope that defending Olympic champions Great Britain beat Ireland later in the day.

India lost three of four matches in the group matches, losing to world No. 1 the Netherlands (5-1), world No. 2 Germany (2-0) and Great Britain (4-1).
Tokyo 2020 is India’s third appearance at the Olympics. India finished fourth in 1980 in Moscow and 12th in 2016 in Rio.

Meanwhile, South Africa are yet to win a match in the tournament. The world No. 16 lost to Ireland (2-0), Great Britain (4-1), the Netherlands (5-0) and Germany (4-1). South Africa have scored only two goals and conceded 15 in their four outings.
