IPL 2021: 4 IPL teams who have changed their names at least once, check out

The inaugural season of IPL saw the participation of the 8 teams. These were the teams that laid the foundation of the world’s best T20 league, and even today they carry the legacy. However, few of these teams have changed their names at least once in their IPL journeys so far.

Teams in 2008 IPL (Points table at the 2008 season end):

1: Rajasthan Royals

2: Kings XI Punjab

3: Chennai Super Kings

4: Delhi Capitals

5: Mumbai Indians

6: Kolkata Knight Riders

7: Royal Challengers Bengaluru

8: Deccan Chargers

We present you all the four teams that have changed their names at least once:

4: Pune-Warriors – Rising Pune Supergiant

Pune Warriors first came in IPL 2011 season along with Kochi Tuskers. They played three IPl seasons. Due to financial differences between BCCI and the franchise, in May 2013 Pune Warriors withdrew from IPL. Three years later, Rising Pune Supergiant came into the picture and they played two IPL seasons.

3: Deccan Chargers – Sunrisers Hyderabad

Deccan Chargers Hyderabad finished last in the inaugural IPL season. Next year when the tournament took place in South Africa, they won it. The team was up for sale in 2012, Sun TV Network won the bid and they reassembled the team by the name “Sunrisers Hyderabad”. Sunrisers have won two IPL titles so far.

2: Delhi Daredevils – Delhi Capitals

Delhi Daredevils won half of the matches and finished in the top 4 teams in their first campaign in 2008. The ‘Daredevils’ part from their identity got replaced by ‘Capitals’ in 2018 when JSW sports got 50% stakes in the team ownership. Next year in IPl 2019, they qualified for the playoffs for the very first time. In 2020 they were in the finals. Quite a journey!

1: Kings XI Punjab – *Punjab Kings

Reportedly*, Kings XI Punjab look all set to be renamed as “Punjab Kings” from IPL 2021 and onwards. If they do so, they will be the fourth team in the IPL’s history to change the name at least once.
