Benzema’s brace along with a late strike from Asensio ensured Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 3-1 on Saturday, this win took them to 2nd on the points table and are now three points behind the league leaders, Atlético Madrid having played one more match.
Real Madrid dominated proceedings at the start of the match as they strung many passes to get into the flow of the match.
Benzema opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he latched onto Kroos’s delivery and curled the ball into the bottom corner to give the away side the perfect start.
The Frenchman made it 2-0 in the 30th minute as a result of poor play from Celta at the back which led to Kroos nicking the ball off Tapia and flicking it to Benzema, who fired home.
Celta Vigo had a lifeline when they got one back in the 40th minute with a goal from Mina. The Spanish lad got onto the whipped free kick from Suarez and headed home to make it 2-1. The Celta Vigo forward was absolutely unmarked as he timed his run perfectly to head home.
Real Madrid made it 3-1 through Asensio in the 94th minute as he completed a lovely move by heading home a ball from Benzema to seal the points.
Courtois was called into action to deny Aspas in the second half while Benzema could have had a hat trick if he had taken his chances as well.
Aspas had another opportunity to get onto the scoresheet but his free kick struck the outside of the post, which turned out to be their last chance as this loss drops them to 11th in the points table.
Zidane’s men now welcome Eibar for a home match next time out while Celta Vigo play Deportivo Alaves at home too. Both matches will be played after the international break.
