La Liga Results: Luis Suarez on target as Atlético Madrid win 2-1 over Athletic Club, stay on top of the table

Luis Suárez was on target as Atlético Madrid came from behind to win 2-1 over Athletic Club and go six points clear at the top of the table.

A headed finish from Llorente cancelled out Munian’s strike for the visitors before Suarez stepped dispatched the penalty to ensure that the points were sealed.

It was a very poor start from both sides as there was no tempo or pressure put by either side as lack of urgency surrounded the early part of the game.

The visitors got themselves ahead as Munian converted from 12 yards into the bottom corner to make it 0-1. This was the first effort of target by either side.

The hosts did not muster any shot on goal during the first 30 minutes but as soon as they conceded, they started responding well.

They did eventually equalize as Llorente rose highest to Lemar’s cross to head home of a deflection to make it 1-1.

The second half could not have begun in a poorer manner for Athletic Club as Nunez conceded a penalty within 6 minutes of the restart with a foul on Suárez, who confidently stepped up and dispatched it home to make it 2-1 to the hosts.

Athletic Club responded well to the goal with incisive play but could not get a clear chance at goal until Carrasco had a hit, but it was straight at the goalkeeper Simon.

The away side nearly conceded an own goal as Nunez came close to turning the ball into this own net.

Atlético held onto the lead for the remainder of the match as they pocketed the three points and went six points clear at the top of the table.

The contest was a very defensive one with not many shots on goal but at this stage, it was only the result which mattered and Atlético got on the right side of this one.
