Spain held 1-1 against Greece despite Morata’s goal, share a point each in WCQ


It finished honours even in Grenada last night as Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Greece. Morata opened the scoring for the hosts in the 33rd minute but Bakasetas equalized with a penalty in the 57th minute and held on to earn a hard-fought point.
The match turned out to be a very cagey affair as there were a total of 3 shots on targets during the entire proceedings, two of which came from the hosts.
La Roja dominated the ball, starting off on the brighter note and nearly opened the scoring in the 2nd minute but Olmo’s header was over the bar.
Olmo cut inside and struck the ball from the edge of the box in the 32nd minute but was denied by the crossbar.
Spain did not have to wait too long as Morata opened the scoring in the next minute itself with a delightful ball from Koke.
ImageThe Juventus forward controlled it with his chest and fired into the top left corner from close range to make it 1-0.
Greece did not show any attacking intent on the Spanish goal throughout the rest of the first half.
ImageBut with a foul by Martinez on the onrushing Zeca in the box, the Greeks got a chance to level terms and they did so with Bekasetas scoring the penalty without any fuss to make it 1-1.
The Spanish side kept persisting with more tries towards the Greece goal but lacked the final 3rd with Oyarzabal getting the best chance late on to clinch a winner, but the Liverpool left-back Tsimikas denied him the simplest of finishes.
Greece held on for the rest of proceedings as they managed a hard-fought point to open their account in the World Cup 2022 Qualifiers.
