There have been only four occurrences of chasing 400-plus runs in the fourth innings of test cricket. Surprisingly, all outside of Asia. The last time a team successfully chased a four hundred plus run target was in 2008 when South Africa chased down 414 in Perth against the mighty Australians.
5: 395- WI vs BAN, Chattogram (2020-21)
Only one out of the top 5 successful chases in the fourth innings of Test cricket belongs to Asia. Recently in one of the ICC test championship matches West Indies registered a historic win. The debutant Kyle Mayers scored a double-ton.
4: IND vs WI, Port of Spain (1975-76)
This match is considered one of the greatest test matches of all time. India getting all-out on 228 in the first innings and then went on to successfully chased down 403. Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Vishwanath scored a hundred in that innings.
3: 404- AUS vs ENG, Leeds (1948)
Australia scored 400 plus in both the innings of this test match (458 & 404). Sir Don Bradman played a captain’s knock of 173 runs.
2: 414- SA vs AUS, Perth (2008-09)
Under the leadership of Graeme Smith, Proteas had a great tour in Australia. De Villiers and Smith both scored a century in the fourth innings and helped the team in winning the match.
1:418- WI vs AUS, St. John’s (2003)
Shivnarine Chanderpaul leads the home side to chase down a mammoth 418 runs in the fourth innings. Mervyn Dillon helped with 2 scalps in the first inning at 4 wickets in the second.
