The success of a football club lies in the ability to fill the cabinet with silverware and trusting the process which leads to the former conclusion. But some clubs still end up being non winners.
Every club looks forward to doing well and winning their domestic competitions and leagues to reign supreme in the country but the real test lies in being the best in the continent.
The UEFA Champions League does exactly this, as it is a competition to test the elite clubs of Europe by contesting against each other to become the number 1 European club for that season.
We have seen many clubs who have been magnificent and have tremendous success at the being the best in the country but have not been able to reach the zenith of Europe.
Now we visit the top 5 clubs who have been able to win their domestic leagues but are yet to win the coveted Champions League crown.
ImageThe Gunners have been part of 17 successive Champions League seasons starting 2000/01 till 2016/17, but were never able to get their hands on the Continental crown.
The best they have been able to achieve in the elite competition was a Runners up position in the 2005/06 season, when they lost to Barcelona 2-1 in Paris.
Arsenal were a dominant side in England during the 2000’s and early part of 2010’s but could never translate their domestic performances into the Champions League for over close to 2 decades.
Arsene Wenger, who was the manager of the Gunners for those 17 years won all major honors for the North London club but could never get his hands on the European Crown.
Losing two finals is a failure, says distraught Atletico coach Simeone -  Rediff Sports‘Los Colchoneros’, as Atlético Madrid are fondly called are another top European side who have never been able to lift the Champions League in their decorated history.
Atlético Madrid’s best season was the 2013-14 and 2015-16 season where they were second best to Real Madrid on both occasions losing the finals 4-1 and 5-3 on penalties respectively.
They have had to watch their domestic rivals, Barcelona and Real Madrid win the trophy a number of times but themselves are yet to succeed.
Having been knocked out this season, they will look to start afresh when they return next season.

Manchester City have brought the best of talents and played beautiful football but have never been able to produce the performances that helps in achieving European glory.
This season we see them play Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals. Can they get over the QF hoodoo and translate their domestic domination into Europe? Only time will tell.

But were never able to utilize the best of the pool of players they had to translate performances into Europe.
They stumbled at semi final stage twice in 2009-10 and 2019-20; being the best they have ever reached in a Champions League season.
The French side were filled with players of high caliber like Lloris, Källström, Govou, Pjanic; but they could not ever get Lyon to the pinnacle of Champions League and have seen fallen away.
After losing so many of these players, Lyon have never been the same force they once were and are struggling to get back to their best.
But as we have always known great teams make great champions and we expect Lyon to be back amongst the big names sooner rather than later.
