Olivier Giroud’s spectacular overhead kick was the difference as Chelsea beat Atlético Madrid 1-0 in Bucharest on Tuesday to take a vital away goal to the Bridge.
By the end of the first half, neither side were active enough in the final third. Timo Werner had his shot saved by Oblak while Mendy survived a mistake at the other end after being closed down by Niguez.
It was not until the 71st minute when Giroud latched onto a deflection from Hermoso and produced a spectacular overhead kick to give Chelsea the lead on the night and in the tie.
The referee intially called for Offside but VAR intervened and overturned the decision.
Atlético did not create much post the goal and it finished 0-1 to the Blues with the Atlético Madrid not having a single shot on target.
