Japan 2-1 Germany: Japan complete a sensational comeback to beat Germany 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup 2022 Group E match on Wednesday.
Gündogan gave German the lead in the first half before a second half resilient comeback form Japan through subs, Doan and Asano ensured a victory for Samurai Blue.
FIRST HALF
Germany almost suffered an early scare as Maeda tapped in after just 8 minutes, but was offside to give the 2014 champions a huge let off.
Japan began on a high and were quick with their passing and consistent pressing, pressure on the German side.
Die Mannschaft took a while to get into the game and as the half wore on, got into rhythm.
The German got their reward in the 33rd minute as they were awarded a penalty after afoul by Japan goalkeeper, Gonda on Raum with his trailing leg.
Gündogan stepped up for the spot-kick and converted comfortably to give German the deserved lead.
Havertz found the net in first half extra time from Gnabry’s drilled effort but was offside. Flick’s men became confident after finding the net and held their own as the half ended.
SECOND HALF
Germany started off the 2nd half well and had their chances early on with Gnabry and Musiala missed the target.
However; Japan was enterprising and dynamic in their style of play with a change in the 2nd half as Tomiyasu entered the fray.
Die Mannschaft should have made it 2-0 but Gundogan’s effort hit the base of the left post.
The Samurai Blue put Germany under pressure with the pressing and were knocking on the door. Eventually, they broke it down with Doan equalizing after a brilliant piece of play.
Mitoma combined with Minamino to enter behind the German backline. The Monaco player’s shot was saved by Neuer, only to be parried into the path of Doan; who smashed it into the net.
Japan made it 2-1 within 8 minutes of equalizing as Asano struck a dagger through German’s hearts with his brilliant effort.
He met Itakura’s long ball with a beauty of a first shot before smashing home from the tightest of angles.
Germany was shell-shocked and tried to find the way back into the game but it wasn’t enough as Japan showcased grit, desire to get the three points.

This is a second shock of the tournament after Argentina’s loss to Saudi Arabia yesterday; which makes this a fascinating start to the FIFA World Cup.
