Alexander Arnold scores in extra time as Liverpool comeback to win 2-1 against Aston Villa; rise to 4th in the table


Liverpool defeated Aston Villa 2-1 on Saturday to register their first home win since mid-December as Alexander-Arnold scores the winner in extra time.

Watkins opened the scoring for Villa before Salah equalized for the hosts and Alexander-Arnold ensured Liverpool’s comeback to win 2-1.
Liverpool dominated proceedings from the start and the first half was no different.
Salah got Martinez into action in the 5th minute with the Argentine making a comfortable save.
The Egyptian had another chance to open the scoring for the hosts but narrowly missed the far corner as he went one-on-one with Martinez.
Firmino also came close but dragged his shot wide.
Despite having very little of the possession, it was Villa who broke the deadlock as Watkins scored to make it 1-0 in the 43rd minute.

VAR intervened in first half extra time and denied Firmino a goal as Jota was adjudged offside in the build up to the goal

Robertson made a driving run and had a shot saved by Martinez but Salah was present to head it home on the rebound to make it 1-1.
Trezeguet nearly doubled the lead for Villa but was denied as his shot rebounded off the post.
Liverpool kept the pressure on and kept attacking the Villa goal and were richly rewarded in extra time through Alexander-Arnold.

It was too little too late for Villa as they were distraught with the last-minute goal concession.
Liverpool held on 2-1 to clinch the points and go 4th in the points table. Aston Villa remain 10th.
