It was a Blue-Red truce as Chelsea played out a competitive 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Sunday at the Bridge.
The Blues started off well with some quick passing and good build up play but were not clinical in the final third going forward.
United had the first chance of the game with Rashford’s free kick which was hit with sufficient dip but Mendy made a decent save.
The ball appeared to have had hit Callum Hudson Odoi’s hand in the aftermath of Mendy’s save and after a check from VAR, it came to nothing.
An inviting cross from Hudson-Odoi to Giroud was the next piece of action but that was a bit too far for the Frenchman to reach as he dived for it.
The rest of the half did not prove too fruitful as both the teams went at each other but were not clinical enough.
EPL: Chelsea draw against Southampton 1-1, stay fourth in the league table
In the second half, Manchester United’s Scott Mctominay had a low shot saved by Mendy after some good play.
Luke Shaw’s crossing had a lot more purpose along with United stepping on the pedal.
Chelsea got in Reece James for Hudson-Odoi to infuse some pressing and pace into the Blues’ play.
United were much more potent in the second half but could not create out and out goalscoring chances and so were Chelsea.
Bruno Fernandes was not at his fluent but kept the play moving and was holding up the proceedings well.
The game was devoid of quality especially in the final third as both teams shared the spoils. It was a fair result for what was on showcase and both teams should be content with the outcome.
This result means that Manchester United stay in second but are 12 points off their neighbours and league leaders, Manchester City. Chelsea stays put in fifth place.
Chelsea has a tough upcoming fixture as they host the champions, Liverpool in midweek while Manchester United have a tricky fixture in Crystal Place at Selhurst Park on Wednesday.
