EPL Manchester Derby Result: Goals from Fernandes and Shaw help Manchester United beat Manchester City 2-0, end their 21-match winning streak

It was a Red Bolt against the Blues as Manchester United triumphed against Manchester City 2-0 with goals from Fernandes and Shaw to end City’s 21 match winning streak.

It was a performance which merited a positive result as United were brave, went toe to toe and showed tremendous resolve and grit to win this contest.

United got off to the best of starts as Martial was clipped clumsily by Jesus in the box resulting in a penalty which was fired in by Fernandes to give the away side the lead. Ederson got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out.

Shaw had a chance to make it 2-0 within a few minutes after but his shot was straight at Ederson.

City shocked by this approach took a few minutes to settle themselves and get into the game but lacked a clinical edge in the final third to trouble the United no 1, Dean Henderson.

City came close to an equalizer in the second half as Rodri’s fired a shot but it could only clip the bar.

United made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half through Shaw as he scored with a precise finish after some good combination play with Rashford down the left flank.

Once City were 2-0 down, it was difficult to comeback as United were dogged in their approach and kept stopping any hints of a City move. City had their chances to score but were not clinical enough.

Martial had a chance to make it 3-0 but his point-blank range shot was saved by Ederson. The away side held up exquisitely in the remainder of the game to pocket the three points.

The final whistle blew to mark the end of the 21-match winning streak for City as the Blue Brigade were stopped by the Red Devils Army.

After this result, Manchester United stay at second place and have reduced the gap to 11 points.

Manchester City next play Southampton next week on Wednesday while United have a Round of 16 home match against AC Milan in their Europa League.
