Teams miss WC 2022: The World Cup qualifiers are almost done and dusted with 29 teams finding their place in the upcoming World Cup Finals.

However, we have witnessed some of the heart-breaking moments in these matches as it has ensured certain top sides won’t make the finals.

There are few teams that were expected to reach the World Cup event this year, but slipped up and will not grace us with their presence.

Without further ado, we look at the top 5 teams that will miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar as they did not manage to qualify for the event.

Nigeria

The Super Eagles after 3 successive appearances in World Cups will not be part of the 2022 edition after they lost on away goals in the play-off final vs Ghana.

Nigeria has been one of the most consistent African sides to play in the international event and it was indeed heart-break to not witness them this year.

A draw vs Ghana saw Nigeria getting knocked out on the away goals as Partey and Troost-Ekong scored for either side.

Nigeria had a brilliant domestic campaign having finished top of the table with 13 points.

However, a goalless draw in the 1st leg and a 1-1 draw in the 2nd leg against Ghana saw them slip-up at the last stage.

Colombia

Image2018 WC’s Round of 16 finishers, Colombia is not part of the upcoming FIFA WC after failing to qualify for the CONMEBOL Qualifiers.

Colombia finished 6th in the group after a rather inconsistent campaign where they managed 23 points from 14 matches, losing 5 of them.

The likes of Cuadrado, Falcao, Ospina and Rodriguez are certain players that will be missing from the tournament.

It was an incredible moment in the last 2 WC’s when Colombia proved to be a thorn for most teams.

However; they will not take the flight to the Middle East this time and will be missed.

Sweden

ImageThe FIFA 2018 WC Quarter-Finalists, Sweden is another team out of contention in the upcoming tournament.

Sweden finished runners-up in their qualifying group and had to endure the play-off route to the WC.

A win over Czech Republic before a loss to Poland in the Final saw them miss out on yet another WC.

Since the 2006 edition, Sweden has managed to qualify for just 1 WC (2018).

The world could well have seen the last of Zlatan Ibrahimović for the national side after he failed to help Sweden reach the WC Finals.

The Pharaohs have endured back-to-back failures in 2022 after having lost the AFCON finals earlier and now the FIFA WC.

Salah and Co faced Senegal once again but with a WC spot on the line and lost 3-1 on penalties to crash out of the tournament.

After the high of reaching the WC in 2018, Egypt once again will need to watch the tournament from the outside.

Italy

It was yet another heart-breaking moment for the Azzurri, as Italy missed out on a berth in the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

The Euro 2020 champions lost 1-0 to North Macedonia in the play-off semi-final which saw them crash out and miss the upcoming WC.

Italy has now missed out on qualification to successive World Cups since 2014.
