IPL 2022 Retentions: 4 players Mumbai Indians Can Retain Before the Mega Auction

MI 4 players retain: IPL 2022 retention rules were announced yesterday. Here are the 4 players that Mumbai Indians can retain before the mega auction!

IPL 2021 finished two weeks ago with Chennai Super Kings lifting their 4th title. However, the machine for IPL 2022 has already started running!

Earlier this week, we got to know the cities of the two new teams – Ahmedabad and Lucknow, as well as their respective owners – CVC Capital Partners and the RP-SG Group.

IPL 2022 Retention Rules

Yesterday, the retention rules before the mega auction for the next season were announced. As per these rules, each of the current 8 franchises are allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players only.

Now these 4 players can be retained in two combinations – 2 Indians and 2 Overseas, or 3 Indians and 1 Overseas. There is no limit on capped or uncapped players, within the ceiling of the Indians to be retained.

The 2 new teams will have to choose 3 players each from the rest of the players pool before the mega auction. Each team is likely to have a maximum purse of INR 90 crores going into the auction.

4 players Mumbai Indians can retain

With the rules all explained, we begin with our list of possible players that each of the original 8 franchises can retain.

First up are the 5-time champions Mumbai Indians. Here are the 4 players we think the Blue Brigade will not let go:

#4 – Rohit Sharma

Let’s start with the obvious choice. He’s the marquee player for Mumbai. The man who has won them 5 titles! Although his batting records in the IPL have been poor over the last 3 or 4 seasons, his captaincy prowess is unquestioned!

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Rohit will once again walk out wearing the blue and gold jersey next year as well!

#3 – Jasprit Bumrah

If Rohit is a shoe-in, so is this man. He’s a star that Mumbai have made and developed, and they have no intentions of letting him go anywhere, anytime soon!

So there’s no need for fans of other teams to raise their hopes, as Bumrah will most likely stay with Mumbai Indians.

#2 – Kieron Pollard

The West Indian all-rounder might be ageing, but he’s still one of the best finishers of the game in T20 cricket. He’s only ever played for one IPL team in his 11-year IPL career. And we all know it’s the Mumbai Indians!

This association will continue once again, as Pollard will most likely be their overseas pick in the retention.

#1 – Hardik Pandya

This will be a tough call for MI, given the all-rounder’s form and fitness issues lately. However, just like Bumrah, Mumbai will not be comfortable letting a star that they have built and invested in over the years, just go like that!
