IPL 2022 Schedule, Points Table, Date, Venue, New Teams Name, Format, Rules & More

IPL 2022 Schedule: With 2 new teams announced in the IPL earlier this week, we look at the new format and much more!

IPL 2022 might still be around 6 months away, but the talks about the edition have already begun! As the league will once again be a 10-team affair for the first time after the year 2011, with 2 new teams announced by the BCCI earlier this week.

The 2 teams belong to Ahmedabad and Lucknow, with CVC Capital Partners owning the Ahmedabad side and the RPSG Group owning the Lucknow team.

Here are the details of the new season’s format:

New Format – League Stage

With the increase in the number of teams, the matches in the league stage will are also set to increase. Instead of the present 56, there will be 74 matches played in the league stage.

For the first time in the league’s history, we will see the teams divided into two groups, of 5 teams each. Each team will play the other 4 in their group twice – home and away.

Each team will also get to play all 5 times of the other group as well, but only once. Therefore, that makes it 13 games. However, the catch here is that there is also a 14th game which each team will play with only ONE of the 5 teams in the other group.

Illustrative Example

The 10 teams are – Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Punjab, Rajasthan, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Lucknow.

For instance, Group 1 consists of – Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore and Lucknow.

And, Group 2 consists of – Mumbai, Punjab, Rajasthan, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

If we now consider Delhi, they will play 8 games against the 4 other teams within Group 1, both home and away.

Then Delhi will also play 5 games against all teams of Group 2, naturally a few home and a few away.

In addition, they will play their 14th game against ONE of the Group 2 teams. How that team of the opposite group will be decided is unknown at this stage.

Format – Playoffs

Once the league stage is done and dusted, the Top 4 teams will qualify to the Playoffs.

The format here stays the same. Qualifier 1 between No.1 and No.2, with the winner going straight to the final and the loser getting another chance.

Eliminator between No.3 and No.4, with the winner advancing to Qualifier 2 and the loser going home.

Qualifier 2 between the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator, with the winner going to the final.
