Pessina scores as Italy beat Wales 1-0 in Euro 2020 match, top Group A standings; check out

Italy 1-0 Wales: Italy topped Group A standings as they won their third match of the Euro 2020 with a 1-0 win over Wales on Sunday.

Pessina’s first half strike was enough as Azzurri won the 11^th successive international match.

FIRST HALF

Italy began the half in a bright manner and took the game to Wales as they looked to finish Group A with 3 wins out of 3 matches. They made 8 changes to their side from the last match.

The hosts were relentless in their pressing while testing Ward on numerous occasions from Belotti, Chiesa and Emerson.

Page’s side were compact in defence and kept Azzurri limited to acute angles.

Italy’s relentlessness was rewarded in the 39^th minute as they took the lead through Matteo Pessina to make it 1-0.

The Atalanta mid-fielder flicked a volley towards the bottom left-corner from Verratti’s inviting delivery to send his side ahead.

It was a deserved lead as Italy dominated possession and controlled proceedings to reach half time 1-0 up.

SECOND HALF

Bernadeschi had the chance to increase Italy’s lead but the Juventus mid-fielder hit the post from a free-kick.

Wales were down to 10-men when Ethan Ampadu was sent off for a late tackle on Bernadeschi.

Belotti tested Ward with a smart strike as the Welsh keeper made the save with his feet to keep Wales in the contest.

Bale came close for Wales at the other end as he smashed his left-footed volley over the crossbar.

The Tottenham winger was unmarked at the back-post but could not keep his shot down.

Andrea Belotti had one last chance to score for Italy but Ward managed to parry away a good save.

That was the last piece of action as Italy won 1-0 against Wales to top the Group A standings.

Wales finished 2^nd in the Group A standings with 4 points.
