Argentina 2-1 Australia: Messi mesmerizes as Argentina beat Australia 2-1 in their Round of 16 match to seal a place in the FIFA WC 2022 Quarter-Finals.
The captain led the way with a expertly constructed finish before Alvarez doubled the lead with a gift of goal. A massive deflection off Fernandez got Australia within a goal but it wasn’t enough.

Messi encapsulated one and all with another talisman-like performance as he gave Argentina the lead with an exquisite finish to score his 9th WC goal for the nation in his 1000th match.
Alvarez doubled the lead in the second half with a gift of a goal from Australian goalkeeper, Ryan who was caught under pressure from Rowles’ pass. The Man City forward stole the ball and slotted into an empty net.
Australia got their goal back through Fernandez after a massive deflection from Goodwin’s strike wrong footed Martinez and found the net.
The Socceroos put Argentina under pressure towards the end and Kuol could have scored the equalizer for them but for a superb save from Martinez.
Lisandro Martinez had the chance to kill the game at 2-1 but hit his effort wide of the target. It was a tad nervy towards the end but Argentina held on to seal a place in the Q/F.

This win sets them up for a Quarter-final clash vs Netherlands; which is a repeat of the 2014 WC Semi-final.
