Most Runs Opening Partnerships: Test cricket over the years has seen many successful opening partnerships. We look at 5 such opening pairs that have garnered the most runs!
#5 – Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag
We start off with a pair that basically ruled Indian Test cricket in late 2000s. With Gambhir being the ice to Sehwag’s fire, it was the perfect combo to start the innings!
The two amassed 4,412 runs together at an average of 52.52.
#4 – Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya
While the middle was covered by Sangakkara and Jayawardene, the top was handled with aplomb by Atapattu and Jayasuriya! The two racked up 4,469 runs at an average of 40.26 while opening the innings together.
#3 – Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss
The fact that England are still looking for an able replacement to this opening pair in Test cricket is a testament to the impact these two had.

Cook and Strauss together made 4,711 runs in opening stands at an average of 40.96.
#2 – Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer
Hayden and Langer might have sat in opposite dugouts a couple of weeks ago in the T20 World Cup semifinal between Australia and Pakistan, but they were a treat to watch when they batted together for the Aussies!
They amassed 5,655 runs together as an opening pair, averaging a strong 51.88 while doing so!
#1 – Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes
Cricket has only really seen two dominant sides in its history. We have covered an opening pair from one (Australia in late 90s to 2000s). So it is only fitting now that we cover the other one (West Indies from 70s through 80s).
