Match Preview
La Marea Roja lost 3-2 to Honduras on Saturday, while Grenada were officially eliminated with a second 4-0 loss in a row.
The Panamanians have been a model of consistency in the Gold Cup group stage, advancing to the quarter-finals in each of the previous eight tournaments, but that record is in serious jeopardy this time around.
Panama looked to be in control against Honduras on Saturday, leading 2-1 at half-time, but they were complacent in the second half and conceded two goals in four minutes, and they now have just one point from two games.
While very interesting to watch, the wide-open attacking style of football may not have been the most successful formula for Thomas Christiansen and his team in their first two games against two teams with a lot of offensive potential.
They have no choice now but to be careful and try to score often against Grenada in their last game. As they need Qatar to lose their last game. And they need to win by at least five goals if they want to keep it their quarter-final streak intact.
Since losing their last group stage match at the 2018 World Cup, 2-1 to Tunisia. The Panama side have not lost on the first goal, although they haven’t won a game conceding the opener since their last World Cup qualifier in 2017 versus Costa. Rika, came back to win the game 2-1.
After conceding four goals in their opening game of the tournament, Grenada followed it up with another poor display against Qatar, losing by the same scoreline.
Perhaps the best news for them heading into their final group game is that this will be their last in the competition, a tournament that has shown them how far they still have to go to be competitive in this region.
Grenada only had 36% possession in their second game of the tournament as they outshot 21-5 and allowed nine shots on target, so the fact that they conceded only four goals might be a small miracle in itself.
Manager Michael Findlay backed his side following the 4-0 loss to Honduras, saying they were full of confidence and that their future was bright, but after suffering a second lopsided loss, one has to wonder if that trust has been shaken.
