Top 10 Records in Cricket That Will Never Be Broken? Check Out

10 unbreakable cricket records: Here are the top 10 records in cricket which might never be broken!

There’s a famous saying in sports that records are meant to be broken. It has been proven true time and again. Some individual or some team sets a brilliant record, only for it to be broken later on.

However, there are some records which have stood the test of time, and will continue to stay put for some time to come!

Here are 10 such records in cricket, that might just never be broken:

#10 – Highest score by a nightwatchman

The Aussies had sent out Jason Gillespie as a nightwatchman against Bangladesh at Chittagong in a Test in 2006. Little did they (or probably even Jason himself!) know what was about to unfold next.

Gillespie batted through the next day as well, and got himself not just a century, but a double ton!

Him and Mike Hussey stitched together a 310-run partnership as Gillespie ended with 201 not out, and the Aussies declared their innings at 581 for 4!

With Test batting not at its very peak in the modern era, it is hard to imagine for a nightwatchman to bat for that long and get a double hundred for himself in today’s day and age!

#9 – Brian Lara’s 400 not out

Brian Charles Lara’s hunger for runs was insatiable. In 131 Tests, he scored 11,953 runs at an average of 52.89. He also holds the record for the only man in the world to score a quadruple ton in Test cricket!

Lara initially held the record for the highest individual score at 360, but it was snatched away by Matthew Hayden who ended up with 380. However, he wanted that record so badly that he didn’t just surpass Haydos, he scored a quadruple century as well!

David Warner came very close in the year 2019 with his 335 not out against Pakistan, but to reach that landmark and even surpass it, seems very unlikely in at least a few years from now.

#8 – de Villiers’ 31-ball 100

This is one of the do-able ones on this list. ABD walked in at the end of an outstanding opening partnership of 247 runs, and with just 69 balls to go.

What followed was total carnage! Mr. 360 played shots all around the Wanderers to score a century in just 31 balls! He beat Corey Anderson’s record by 5 balls.

ABD ended up with 149 off just 44 balls, and this mad hitting propelled South Africa’s score to 439 for 2! Even with the hard hitters becoming too common now, this is still a very difficult one to break down.

#7 – Murali’s 1,347 international wickets

Muttiah Muralitharan has been an absolute stalwart of the game. He is the highest wicket-taker in Tests of all time by a distance, at 800 wickets!

However, he also holds the record for the most number of overall wickets in international cricket, adding another 547 to his tally.

There is so much cricket being played these days and the players find it tough to maintain their fitness levels over long periods of time.

So, it is very difficult to think that a bowler in the future can claim 1,348 international wickets or more, to his name.

#6 – Sachin’s 34,357 international runs

From most international wickets, we come to most international runs. Sachin Tendulkar, also known by many as the God of cricket, has a staggering 34,357 runs in international cricket to his name.

To put this into perspective, no other batter has reached the 30,000 mark yet. Kumar Sangakkara is the next best on this list with 28,016 runs.

In the Top 10 list, there is only one active player – Virat Kohli, who’s at No.7 with 23,049 runs. But can the 33-year-old add a further 11,000+ runs to his tally in his remaining active years? We have to wait and see!

#5 – Gayle’s 175 in IPL

Christopher Henry Gayle has been an absolute legend in the shortest format. In the year 2013, he was at the peak of his powers.

At the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the Universe Boss smashed 175 not out off just 66 deliveries, to overtake Brendon McCullum’s 158 as the highest individual score in an IPL game.

That record has stood for more than 8 years now, and we do not believe it is going away anytime soon!

#4 – Rohit Sharma’s 264

For the longest time, Saeed Anwar’s 194 stood as the highest individual score in ODI cricket. Sachin Tendulkar broke it in the year 2010 by scoring the first-ever double-hundred in ODIs.

Then followed a string of double-hundreds from various batters. However, one fine evening in the year 2014, Rohit Sharma went out to bat as an opener, and batted the entire 50 overs!

The Hitman bashed a hapless Sri Lankan bowling attack to all parts of Eden Gardens, scoring a mammoth 264 off just 173 balls.

Sri Lanka themselves were bowled out for 251, falling short of Rohit by 13 runs!

Martin Guptill had later reached 237 next year, but Rohit maintained his lead and might continue to do so for a few years to come!

#3 – Maiden Super Over

Yes, you read that right! In a CPL game, Sunil Narine bowled the Super Over for the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Having only 11 to defend against Nicholas Pooran, the veteran bowled a magical spell as Pooran just could not get bat to ball. The one ball he did connect, he holed it out to a fielder at long-off!

Narine did not concede a single run in the Super Over. Amidst all the mad hitting that is going on, it is next to impossible to equal that feat again!

#2 – Jim Laker’s 19 wickets in a Test

We will go back in time for our last two entries. The right arm off-break bowler featured in a 1956 Ashes game against Australia at Old Trafford.

He returned with the following figures in that match – 9 for 37 in the first innings, and 10 for 53 in the second.

Of the 20 wickets up for grabs, he claimed a jaw-dropping 19! It is the highest number of wickets taken by a bowler in a single Test match.

This is a record that has stood tall for 65 years now, and we do not see it getting broken (or even equalled!) anytime soon!

#1 – Don Bradman’s 99.94

There cannot be any other entry at No.1 of this list! Sir Donald Bradman was one of the greatest ever to grace the game of cricket.

In 80 innings of 52 Tests, Bradman scored 6,996 runs, at an average of – hold your breath – 99.94!

It is a sad story that he could not finish his career with an average of perfect 100. He was dismissed for a duck in his final game at The Oval against England, in the year 1948.

This is a record which is not humanly possible for any batter to break, or even match, in the modern game.

A batter would need to be insanely talented, skilled and also a bit lucky to even think of reaching 99.94! We do not see anyone doing that, probably ever.
