Retirement is not an easy decision for any sportsmen, as it culminates an established career and also draws to an emotional end one hard-work and sacrifices.

Just like 2021, this year too some top footballers have retired and brought an end to their glittering careers.

Andre Onana

ImageThe Cameroon goalkeeper announced his retirement from international football at the age of 26 after being suspended by team management from the WC.

The Inter Milan player was ousted following disciplinary reasons and due to disagreements with the management, has called it quits.

Onana represented Cameroon in the AFCON 2021 and World Cup 2022 Finals having secured 34 caps.

Eden Hazard

ImageFollowing Belgium’s calamitous exit from the WC 2022 in the group-stage, Eden Hazard announced his retirement at age of 31.

The Real Madrid player has been suffering injuries and poor form ever since he made the move to Los Blancos from Chelsea in 2019.

This even affected his career with the Belgian Red Devils and after a lackluster World Cup 2022, Hazard felt the time was right to move on.

Hazard announced his retirement hours after Belgium’s group stage exit from the WC, after they finished in 3rd behind Morocco and Croatia.

Wahbi Khazri

Khazri chose to call it quits from the Tunisian team following the conclusion of the World Cup. Tunisia secured a third place finish in Group D with 4 points from 3 matches.

A draw against Denmark followed by a win over France where Khazri scored the only goal were the nation’s best results in the 2022 World Cup.

Aged 31, Khazri ended his career with the African side with 25 goals from 74 appearances.

Sergio Busquets

The Spain captain announced his retirement from international football following Spain’s Round of 16 exit vs Morocco on penalties.

Busquets was an integral part of the Spanish team that lifted the 2010 WC early in his career but this defeat hurt him hard as it was unexpected. He missed his penalty in the shootout and was captain of the side in all 4 matches.

Sergio made his debut for Spain in 2009 vs Turkey and ended a 13-year career with the nation side on a rather disappointing note.

Karim Benzema was ruled out of the FIFA World Cup 2022 just before the tournament began due to an injury.

Post France’s loss to Argentina in the final, Benzema announced his retirement from the national side on his 35th birthday. He scored 37 goals in 97 appearances, making his debut in 2007 vs Austria.

The current Ballon D’or holder seemed to have issues with the French manager, Deschamps alongside other players; which could not be resolved.
