Bumrah and Shami then took the new ball and gave India a great start by sending both the openers to the pavilion in the first two overs. The ball going to Bumrah’s leg side was waved in the air with the outer edge of Rory Burns (0). Which was caught by Mohammad Siraj running.

Shami got Sibley (0) caught behind the wicket in the next over. England’s score again became one run for 2 wickets. Shami would soon get India the wicket of Haseeb Hameed. But Rohit Sharma dropped his easy catch in the slips.

However, this mistake did not cost India very much as Hameed could only score nine runs. Ishant made him leg before the ball coming in. In Siraj’s next over, the ball reached for four runs through Rishabh Pant’s gloves after kissing the bat with Root. India started playing 181 for six in the morning and added 105 runs for the loss of two wickets in the session before a charismatic performance from Shami and Bumrah. This added to the difficulties for England, which seemed to be in a better position after early dismissals of Pant (22 runs off 46 balls) and Ishant (16 runs from 24 balls) in the morning.

India go 1-0 in the series

The Indian team at one point was not even looking in a position to take a 200-run lead after scoring 209 for eight. Shami and Bumrah, however, batted with ease and thrilled their teammates including captain Virat Kohli with their shots.

Captain Root was under so much pressure that he scattered the fielding. But it only helped the Indian batsmen and they easily stole 1-2 runs.

Shami targeted spinner Moeen Ali on the slow falling pitch. Shami completed the second half-century of his Test career by hitting four consecutive balls of this spinner and a 92 meter long six at midwicket. For this he played 57 balls. Bumrah then crossed the previous highest score of his career (28 runs).
