Third place finish in WC: Croatia meet Morocco later today in the FIFA World Cup 2022 Bronze Medal match which ensures one finishing 3rd.

It is not usually the best time for either losing semi-finalist to play, as they are down and out of the tournament. But as per the rules, a 3rd place finish in a requirement.

The two sides in 2022 contesting for this hope for one last ditch performance to help seal their place as the 3rd best team in the world.

Without further ado, we look at the top 5 teams with most third place finished in WC history.

Poland

Poland have secured a 3rd place finish in the FIFA World Cup competition on 2 occasions.

In the 1974 WC, Poland secured a 3rd place finish after beating Brazil 1-0 in Munich with Grzegorz Lato scoring the only goal.

Once again in 1982, the Polish side managed a 3rd place finish when they beat France 3-2 at Alicante. Szarmach, Majewski and Kupcewicz were the scorers on the night of 10th July.

France

ImageFrance has also secured 2 3rd place finishes in the FIFA World Cup competition.

It was in the 1958 and 1986 edition when Les Bleus lost their crucial semi-final clash and had to settle for a 3rd place.

Sweden

ImageLike Poland, Sweden too has finished 3rd in the World Cup on two occasions, being 1950 and 1994.

They beat Spain 3-1 in their 3rd place clash during the 1950 edition while smashing Bulgaria 4-0 in the 1994 edition.

Brazil

The 5-time World Champions missed out on their dream once again in 2022, when they lost to Croatia in the Quarter-Finals.

However; earlier in their history they have finished 3rd in the competition on 2 occasions being 1938 and 1978 respectively.

Sweden and Italy were the teams who Brazil beat in their knockout clash to secure this position during the two World Cup’s.

The German side has sealed the most 3rd place finishes in the World Cup so far (4).

It was in the 1938 WC when Germany first secured a 3rd place finish followed by one in 1970 when they were known as West Germany.

But the last 2 came in the 2000’s when they finished in that position in successive World Cup’s being 2006 and 2010.

During the 2006 home WC, Germany beat Portugal while in South Africa they overcame the might of Uruguay.
