3 Reasons why PSG doesn’t need Messi anymore after last night’s defeat

Messi to leave PSG: The main question for PSG this season remains the future of Lionel Messi as the player is yet to renew his 2-year contract.

The Argentine’s stay at the French club has come under question with talks stalled on a new and improved contract.

Following the 1st leg loss to Bayern in the Round of 16 last night, PSG once again came under the scanner for not being able to deliver in the UCL.

If Messi and Co miss out on the UCL this season as well, things could take a turn for the worse.

Without further ado, lets take a look why PSG doesn’t need the Argentine anymore and can make do without his presence.

Lionel Messi signed for PSG in the summer of 2021 on a 2-year contract. With his contract set to end in the summer, talks have been stalled on his future.

Particularly with his contract talks not making progress, it would not be the likely scenario to have him around next season.

Despite an incredible 2022 for country and current good form as well, Messi has not been as influential at PSG as he was at his former club.

If a renewal talks resume, Messi’s contract could cost PSG a fortune and to avoid this investment, they would likely let him depart in the summer.

With the presence of the three in Neymar, Messi and Mbappe; there could be ego clashes in the dressing room and otherwise.

Mbappe recently signed a new contract with the club which makes him the marquee man at the club. If Messi departs, the forward could become more influential in the playing style of PSG.

Galtier’s claim last night of PSG’s trio not being able to play together and well makes a strong claim. The Argentine’s departure could see Paris perform better.

Messi sealed his ultimate dream in Qatar when he lifted his first World Cup title.

However, since his arrival from the competition Messi has not played with the same enthusiasm and passion like prior to the World Cup.

There has been a dip in levels of performance like last night, where Messi was a by-stander in the loss to Bayern at home in the UCL.

One can say Messi was got into the squad to help PSG achieve their first European title in the UCL but that does not seem to be going to plan.

PSG lost a hat-trick of matches across competitions last night and a 5th across 11 matches in 2023.

The French club can think about the future with Messi’s non-committal to the club and let him depart in the summer.
