Acuna scores as Sevilla beat Atlético Madrid 1-0 to blow the title race wide open

Sevilla beat table toppers, Atlético Madrid 1-0 at home on Sunday to keep the La Liga title race on a knife edge as Acuna scored the winner.
Acuna’s second half strike was enough to seal the points and put Simeone’s men under pressure as they are now only three points off Barcelona at the top of the table with nine games to go.
ImageDiego Simeone’s side were very poor throughout proceedings and deservedly lost the contest.
Sevilla put pressure on the visitors in the 7th minute as they won a penalty for a foul on Rakitic by Saul in the box.
ImageOcampos stepped up but was denied brilliantly by Oblak, who guessed right to deny the home side from going in front.
Neither side created many chances later in the half but Sevilla’s possession and movement off the ball was creating enough trouble for the Atlético, who could not string any sort of rhythm into their play.
Navas nearly scored in the 30th minute but his strike narrowly missed the inside of the far post.

Bounou made a great stop in the second half to hold onto Koke’s well hit volley.
ImageSevilla finally broke the deadlock in the 70th minute as Acuna headed home from Navas’ cross to send the home side 1-0 ahead.
It was intricate play from the home side as Suso split the Atlético defence to send Navas into free space.
The Spanish international then chipped a cross to the far post for an unmarked Acuna to head past Oblak to score the important opener.
Atlético almost got the equalizer in extra time but Correa only managed to stab his shot into the body of Bounou to miss the big chance.
It finished 1-0 in favour of the home side and no one could deny that they did not deserve it. Atlético were poor and slack throughout.
ImageThis result will certainly keep both Barcelona and Real Madrid happy as Simeone’s men have dropped points at a very crucial stage of the season to keep the title race wide open.
Atlético Madrid after this loss still stay on top of the heap but will be under pressure to not drop another point this season as they could see the title slipping away from their grasp.
