Most AFCON titles: It was a night of celebration in Cameroon as Senegal lifted their maiden AFCON title as they beat Egypt on penalties 4-2.

They joined the likes of Zambia, Tunisia and South Africa; all of whom have lifted the Africa Cup of Nations once in their football history.

However, it was a heartbreak night for the Mohamed Salah and the Pharaohs team as they came up short in this final.

It was a repeat of the 2017 AFCON Championship in Gabon where Egypt could not dislodge Cameroon in the finals and had to settle for a runners-up place.

With a new winner in Senegal, we look at the top 5 teams with the most AFCON titles over time.

Algeria

The Greens or Fennec Foxes in Algeria has won the Africa Cup of Nations twice in their history being 1990 and 2019.

Algeria beat Nigeria and Senegal in the 1990 and 2019 AFCON Finals respectively to write their names in the history books of African Football.

Both times, Algeria won by a 1-0 margin with Cherif Oudjani and Baghdad Bounedjah scoring the winners during the two finals.

Nigeria

They won the titles in 1980, 1994 and most recently 2013; which shows their progress as a footballing nation.

Nigeria is one of the most consistent African nations in this tournament having finished runners-up 4 times and third place 8 times.

Ghana

ImageThe Black Stars won the AFCON title four times with their last win coming way back in 1982. Other wins came in 1963, 1965 and 1978.

Ghana has also finished runners-up 5 times in the history of the competition.

Cameroon

ImageNicknamed the Indomitable Lions, Cameroon is the second-most successful African nation in this competition with 5 titles.

Cameroon won the title for the first time in 1984 beating Nigeria 3-1 before lifting it in 1988, 2000, 2002 and most recently 2017.

In The 2017 final, they had to comeback from 1-0 down to win 2-1 with Aboubakar scoring the winner 2 mins from time.

Egypt lead the title race with 7 AFCON titles to their name. The first-ever AFCON was won by them followed by wins in 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Apart from these wins, Egypt has always shown potential in this competition with successful sides over the years.

They have reached knock-out stages of the competition on a number of occasions having finished runners-up and 3rd place, thrice each.
