NBA announces finalist for season 2020-21, Check out who won & how


NBA Awards 2020-21: On May 21st, 2021, NBA had announced the top 3 finalists for the 2020-21 annual awards based on voting results from a global panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.

With the Playoffs and the commencement of conference semifinals in full swing, The NBA on TNT crew has been announcing the winners on who will take home the MVP, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, Most Improved Player and Coach of the Year.

Below is the list of the top 3 finalists

  • MVP (Most valuable player)
  1. Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors
  2. Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers
  3. Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets

On 9th June, the NBA announced that Nikola Jokic earned the KIA MVP award. He broke the franchise history for the Denver Nuggets to receive 91 1st-place votes.

On May 24, 2021, NBA announced Jordan Clarkson as the Kia NBA Sixth Man Award. He averaged a career-high 18.4 points in the 2020-21 regular season, playing 68 of his 69 games off the bench.

  • Most Improved Player of the year
  1. Jerami Grant, Detroit Pistons
  2. Michael Porter Jr., Denver Nuggets
  3. Julius Randle, New York Knicks

New York Knicks forward Julius Randle was named the 2020-21 Kia NBA Most Improved Player, the NBA announced on 25th May 2021. Randle averaged a career-high 24.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game to earn this award.

  • Coach of the Year
  1. Quin Snyder, Utah Jazz
  2. Tom Thibodeau, New York Knicks (winner)

On June 7th, 2021 New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau is the recipient of the Red Auerbach Trophy as the 2020-21 NBA Coach of the Year. Since 2013, Tom Thibodeau helped guide the Knicks to their first playoff berth. This is his second Coach of the Year Award. First, he earned the honor in the 2010-11 season with the Chicago Bulls in his first season as an NBA head coach. Now honored in his first season as the Knicks’ head coach.

Not to forget, he coached Derrick Rose in his first season and he became the “Youngest MVP” in NBA history. He now coached, Julius Randle who became the “most improved player of the year.” Thibodeau has become the first person to be named NBA Coach of the Year in his first season as head coach with two different franchises.

Who votes for these awards & how are they decided?

These awards are decided by a curated panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Each member of the voting panel casts a vote for 1st to 5th-place selections.

For MVP: Players receive 10 points for each 1st-place vote, 7 points for each 2nd-place vote, 5 points for each 3rd-place vote, 3 points for each 4th-place vote, and 1 point for each 5th-place vote.

For Rookie, Coach, Defensive player, Sixth man, Most improved player of the year: A 1st-place vote accounts for 5 points, a 2nd-place vote is worth 3 points and a 3rd-place vote is 1 point.

To keep this affair extremely transparent, the NBA will reveal each voter’s ballot on pr.nba.com after all the announcements.
