UCL Youngest Coach: The 2021-22 UEFA Champions League season knockouts got underway this week as 16 sides began the fight for European glory.

Managing in this competition is one of the most difficult tasks for any coach in succeeding at it is an honor itself due to the pressure.

This season Europe has once again seen some fantastic sides go into the draw and to add to them has been the managers leading these sides.

While some are experienced, others are young in their job and aim to make the impossible possible through their management skills.

Without further ado, we look at the top 5 youngest managers in this season’s UEFA Champions League.

Simone Inzaghi

Inzaghi at 45 is the coach of Inter Milan this season after he joined the Nerazzurri at the start of the season.

After the departure of Conte from the club due to financial constraints, ex-Lazio manager Inzaghi took over for the Serie A champions.

The Italian side faces Liverpool in the Round of 16 and Inzaghi would like to put his managerial skills to the test and gain success.

Simone was with Lazio in his previous term from 2010-2021, where he managed both the youth and senior team.

This is a challenge he aims to succeed in after getting Inter to the knockouts in his first season.

Nelson Verissimo

Benfica’s caretaker manager, Verissimo is next in line aged 44 years. The Portuguese side qualified for the knockouts alongside Bayern Munich from their group and face Ajax in the Round of 16.

Verissimo has been at Benfica since the start of his coaching career from 2012. Firstly, as a caretaker of the B team before gradually moving up the ladder.

In this season, he oversaw wins over Dynamo Kyiv and Barcelona in the group stage.

Now with the battle lines drawn against Ajax, Verissimo looks to bring his side’s A game to the table.

Ruben Amorim

ImageThe Sporting CP coach is another youngster heading his team out in the UCL aged 37 years.

Sporting CP qualified alongside Ajax from their group stage to seal a place in the knockouts with wins over Dortmund and Besiktas (Home and away).

Amorim has managed Sporting CP since 2020 and faces Manchester City in the knockouts.

At 37 years, he is tested against Europe’s best and has shown promise but needs to crack the lid open to keep Sporting in the hunt.

A 5-0 deficit after the 1st leg awaits him, as he hopes to turn things around at Etihad next month.

Julian Nagelsmann

Nagelsmann took over at Bayern Munich at the start of this season and continued the good work done by Flick in getting the German side to the knockouts.

The former Leipzig manager is one of the most talented and highly touted managers of today. At the age of 34, he aims to get Bayern Munich yet another UCL title.

Bayern Munich qualified for the knockouts and face Austrian side, Salzburg in the Round of 16 tie.

Julian is having a positive campaign in the Bundesliga and hopes to translate that form into the Champions League.

Matthias Jaissle

The youngest manager in this season’s competition is Salzburg’s Matthias Jaissle aged 33 years.

He made history by becoming the first manager to help Salzburg qualify for the Round of 16, where they face Bayern Munich.

Jaissle showed potential with his use of players throughout the group stage and in the 1-1 first leg draw vs Munich as well.

With the second leg in Munich, Jaissle aims to encourage his players to play positively and go at the German side if they look to seal a Q/F spot.

Matthias’ side won 3 of the 6 group stage matches and are one of the underdogs this season.
