FIFA World Cup 2022 result: Bale’s late equalizer seals a point for Wales as it ends 1-1 vs USA in their Group B opener


USA 1-1 Wales: Gareth Bale struck late to ensure a share of the spoils as Wales drew USA 1-1 at the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium on Monday night in Group B opener.

Weah gave USA the lead in the first half before Wales struck back through captain Bale in a 2nd half solid display.

FIRST HALF

It was a spirited start to the game for USA, as they showed great verve and enterprise in the opening minutes. The passing was quick and they were able to find spaces on most occasions.

In as early as the 9th minute, USA nearly broke the deadlock by getting Hennessey to make a crucial save off Rodon before Sargent struck the outside off the post.

USA dominated all aspects before finally getting the opener. Pulisic was the man to unlock the door in the 36th minute as his turn and pass played in Weah; who slid the ball home to give USA the lead.

SECOND HALF

Wales began the season half after learning from their 1st half mistakes. They were more settled and controlled in possession and were not playing too high a line.

They tested Turner as he made a stunning reflex save off Davies’ header to keep the lead intact. Within the next minute, Moore headed over the bar from the corner to keep themselves in contention.

The Wales pressure intensified before Zimmermann made an awful tackle on the Welsh captain, Bale to concede a penalty.

Bale equalized in the 82nd minute from the spot as he scored Wales’ first goal after 64 years. They tried to snatch a late winner but it wasn’t possible as both sides shared the spoils.
